History and Collections

The founding of the „Königliches Naturalien-Kabinett” in 1791 provides also the first record of the museum’s library.

Today the scientific library is a reference library, which primarily serves the museum’s researchers and staff of all departments as well as visiting scientists and students. It also offers limited access to the general public.
The library is located in the administrative building of “Museum am Löwentor”.

The library comprises over 100.000 volumes – covering Biology (Zoology / Botany) and Palaeontology (with Geology/ Mineralogy).
About 1500 current journals in print and 150 current e-journals are available.
