Technical Assistant (m/f/x), Coleoptera collection

We are seeking a Preparatory Technical Assistant (m/f/x) for the Coleoptera collection, Department of Entomology

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS) with its two locations Museum am Löwentor and Schloss Rosenstein with more than 150 employees is one of the largest natural history museums in Germany and is a future-oriented research and education institution.
The beetle collection is the largest collection of the entomological department with more than 2 million specimens, including a significant proportion of type material. Research on beetles at SMNS focuses on the systematics, biodiversity and evolution of soil and cave-dwelling beetle groups. Part of your future responsibilities will be the scientific preparation and documentation of extensive collections from current biodiversity projects.

The successful candidate is responsible for the efficient processing of field samples to fully prepared samples. Tasks will range from specimen mounting and labeling to photographing and databasing.

 Your tasks:

  • Preparation of collection material, both in the dry and in the alcohol collection
  • Organization of the beetle collection, e.g. the incorporation of new material, management of loans and items
  • Photo documentation, e.g. with digital microscopes
  • Electronic data collection
  • if necessary laboratory work, such as DNA analysis
  • Technical supervision of trainees, students etc.
  • Participation in field work
  • Taxidermy contributions/preparation to exhibitions

The successful candidate is expected to learn new preparatory techniques if necessary, since technical tasks in the amber collection will also become part of his/her duties after three years.  

Your profile:

  • Trained as preparatory technical assistant, entomological technician, or with comparable professional experience in the field of scientific collection management, ideally with beetles
  • Personal commitment, team spirit and manual skills 
  • Computer literacy and experience with the use of databases
  • Experience in dealing with insect collections, knowledge of beetle diversity, and experience with insect collecting techniques are desired
  • Willingness and ability to participate in field work
