Research interests

I’m interested into a vast range of research projects, from taxonomy, species concept, population genetic into higher level phylogeny and classification. On the other side I’m highly interested to use phylogographic analyses to trace the past event (e.g. the effects of glacial events on the populations). My study models are the species of the family Geometridae and my focus geographic region is Palearctic, particularly West Asia (including Middle East, Caucasus, Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia). Below you find the links to the book projects as well as the list of my current research projects.

In cooperation with the Stuttgart State Academy of Arts this exhibition brings together biology and design.

Butterflies (symbol of rebirth and immortality in Greek mythology), are today in great danger, and in many areas almost disappeared. Due to their absence, the dramatic extent of the insect reduction is also clear to the non-specialist people and this is currently hot debated topic in politics, agriculture and science. Embedded in this current context, the exhibition sheds light on the topic from a completely different angle: the artistic aspect.

Butterflies and fashion: at first glance seems to be not a completely outlandish combination, and it was these two aspects that brought together the Natural History Museum and the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart for an exhibition project. Six students of the Textile Design were inspired by their diversity in the insect magazine of the Natural History Museum, surrounded by 1 million butterflies. They designed scarves and hand-woven patterns for fashion fabrics. Ultimately, in addition to the beauty of the colorful "summer birds" above all the acute threat to these fragile insects was the theme that the students expressed in their designs.
