Gorgonopsians are sabre-toothed predators belonging to the group of therapsids. Mammals later emerged from this group.

Nevertheless, little is known about the origin of therapsids.

The recent discovery of some fossilised gorgonopsid bones in Mallorca has contributed to a better understanding. This gorgonopsid, the oldest found to date, has provided new insights into the early evolution of therapsids.

Now, a research team in Mallorca has discovered fossilised footprints, near the site where the gorgonopsid bones were found, that can be attributed to this gorgonopsid species.

This new discovery provides new insights into the gait of the gorgonopsid and the development of locomotion in mammals in general.
